Core Aeration

Core Aeration is the single best thing you can do for your lawn.  Towing a commercial aerator with an ATV, 16 tines per square foot pull each pull 3 inch cores providing multiple benefits to a lawn. Multiple passes on bare spots, thin or problematic areas allows nutrients and seed to easily enter the soil. Core aeration on a lawn also removes and prevents thatch build up, gives water and nutrients better access to the soil, and prevents problems caused by soil compaction.

  • Decompacts soil, reducing water runoff and puddling.

  • Drastically increases the absorption of nutrients increasing uptake and utilization of lawn applications.

  • Increases heat and drought tolerance.Maximizes new grass seed development.

  • Any lawn will benefit from annual aeration but fall and spring aeration is recommended. Most effective when the lawn is soft and right after the lawn is mowed.

Overseeding

After core aeration is the perfect time to overseed your lawn.

  • Introduces new grass seed to fill-in thin areas and bare spots while helping to thicken the existing turf.

  • Builds resistance to insect damage and disease.

  • Aeration holes enhance growth by providing the perfect environment for new seedlings to grow and prosper.

  • Increases the overall density of grass in a lawn. Allowing the grass to outcompete weeds, limiting their growth.

  • Exclusive use of top grade grass seed from BesTurf (now at Hartville Hardware) provides an extremely high germination rate.

  • A Kentucky Blue/Rye seed mix in generally used for sunny areas and a shade mix is used when needed. Specific seed type or mix available upon request.

Fertilizer

Applying a fertilizer immediately following aeration and/or overseeding allows root systems to gain greater access to, and increase absorption of, the nutrients grass needs to thrive. Fertilizer contains a combination of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, each of which plays a different role in maintaining a healthy lawn. Phosphorus promotes strong root grown, nitrogen fuels top growth and gives your lawn a nice green color while potassium guards against drought and disease. Weed control should not be applied before or after overseeding to avoid harming or killing the new grass.

STARTER FERTILIZER

The perfection compliment to overseeding. Fast-release nitrogen greatly enhances early growth and overall grass development, filling in dead spots and thickening up the entire lawn.

GRANULAR FERTILIZER

Providing nutrients to promote a thick healthy lawn. Fertilizer gives lawns the smooth, healthy, dark green color while a thick lawn provides a natural defense to weed growth.

Lawn Rolling

Over the winter months the continual shifting of the soil due to freezing and thawing creates bumps and divots in a lawn. Rolling your lawn in the spring flattens the bumps and levels the yard. Rolling must be followed by core aeration to avoid soil compaction and the issues associated with it.

Lime Application

Pelletized lime applied to lawns further encourages the growth and strength of your lawn. Overly acidic soils can prevent the absorption of phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium as well as promoting moss growth.

  • Limestone corrects the pH of acidic soil improving nutrient uptake in turf.

  • Reduces toxicity problems by creating a favorable environment for growth.

  • Helps control moss growth.

  • Provides an environment for beneficial microorganisms that break down thatch and lawn clippings.

  • Most effective following aeration for the better absorption into the soil

Iron/Moss Control

Cold weather as well as excessively dry or wet soil reduces the uptake of iron.  These areas are also prone to moss growth. Applying an iron mixture kills moss while providing the iron grass needs to make chlorophyll, giving the lawn a dark deep green color.

Top Dressing

Absolutely amazing, the effect top dressing has on a lawn is stunning. In a matter of weeks top dressing can transform a lawn from struggling with less than 50% coverage to resembling a golf course.

Following core aeration, a 1/4 t o 1/2 inch layer of compost, top soil, sand or a mix of multiple materials is spread over the grass. Another pass with the aerator is then done to further mix the material into the topsoil. The lawn is then overseeded and the topdressing material is lightly raked further into the grass preventing any smothering.

  • Adds organic material and beneficial microorganisms to the lawn. Improving the overall health of the lawn and the natural productivity of the soil.

  • Improves soil structure, increases moisture retention and cation exchange capacity (soil’s ability to exchange nutrients for grass uptake).

  • Retains moisture allowing for easiest seed growth.

  • Slowly releases nutrients from natural sources over a long period of time.

  • Will smooth out uneven terrain
